Interview with John Patching

Hello. My name is John Patching and I am a professional Life Coach, Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner and Meditation Tutor. I have also had the experience of transitioning from the female gender to becoming male.

I am going to be completely honest with you and say that the transition from one gender to another is not an easy path. It is not a choice; it is a necessity in order to become a whole person. It involves a journey of discovery that encompasses all that we are Mentally, Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually. However, I consider this path to be both enlightening and transformational. An opportunity to become consciously aware of who we are in a way that most people struggle to achieve.

I began my transition 20yrs ago when little was known about Gender Dysphoria. Male to Female Transsexuals were considered an extension of drag queens and Female to Male Transsexuals were unheard of. Fortunately, a lot has changed since then; there have been great medical advancements of both treatments and surgical procedures; laws have changed, and there has become public awareness and acceptance of the condition. However, there is still a distinct lack of therapeutic support and emotional understanding. It is for this reason that I believe I have been called to help and support both people who are going through this change and their families and friends.

By combining my personal understanding of Gender Dysphoria and my professional knowledge, I can provide a specialist therapeutic approach that takes into consideration the Mental, Physical, Emotional and Spiritual needs of each client. I am here to help and support you during your time of change.

I offer my services online via skype, which means we can speak in the comfort of your own home.

  • What Does Your Therapy Session Entail?

My service is slightly different from other counselling or talking therapies because my approach is more holistic. I do not see being Transgender as something that needs diagnosis or to be fixed, but rather as an opportunity for self-development and personal healing. Having transitioned myself, from female to male, I have an awareness and understanding that people who haven't been there don't possess. Due to my personal experience, my therapy method is more about looking at life as a whole and the individuals place in it rather than focusing on something and making it an issue when really there is no need.

I teach all my clients to meditate and ask them to keep a journal. These are key components of my approach as they restore balance and provide perspective when stress and anxiety become high, giving empowerment where otherwise overwhelmed could ensue. Looking at the day to day emotions and occurrences gives insight into where fears and unwanted behaviours have come from and then gradually the underlying pain and suffering can be acknowledged, opening the pathway for healing. Depression, anxiety, stress, fears, hurt, suffering and lack of self-worth can all be worked through and transformed into compassion for oneself and others. I can guarantee that working with me will change your life forever.

  • How often do you see clients?

I see my clients weekly to start with, with a view to going fortnightly once settled. As this is a well-being therapeutic approach sessions are ongoing and a commitment of over six months is expected. As everyone is an individual, review chats are ongoing and the client's needs dictate the speed of growth and healing. Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes depending on the individual and my hourly rate is £95.

  • What qualifications do you have and what’s your experience?

I am a qualified Life Coach, Hypnotherapist and NLP Practioner. I am accredited and registered by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR).

I have enjoyed over 10yrs experience of working with people with a range of conditions including physical, mental, and emotional issues. I have been practising Meditation and Mindfulness for 15yrs and teaching for 5yrs, which has given me a profound and deep understanding of life and the world around us.

I have also personally transitioned from female to male and have a unique therapeutic understanding of Transgender Identity (Gender Dysphoria) and the processes involved.

  • Why should I choose to work with you?

I feel that it is very important to have a good, open and trusting rapport with my clients, also to connect with them in a deeply caring manner. I encourage my clients to work together with me, so we can uncover the causes of their issues thus enabling lasting, successful outcomes to be achieved.

I work with all aspects of the individual (mind, body, and spirit) ensuring there is a balance. I believe in helping my clients to master their mental processes to become the best version of themselves possible. I place great emphasis on enabling each individual to access the power within themselves to move forward confidently towards lasting well-being.

As well as working with clients with Gender Dysphoria and their friends/families, I also work with individuals with a range of issues including anxiety, stress and depression, loss of identity, sexuality, relationship issues, confidence and performance anxiety, lethargy and lack of motivation, insomnia, loneliness, trauma, grief and bereavement, and other health issues.

I use Advanced Hypnosis Skills, Neuro-linguistic Training, Life Coaching, LBL Regression, and Mindfulness Techniques, as well as Deep Cleansing and Rejuvenation at a Spiritual Level.

I believe that empowering the individual through teaching them techniques such as Mindfulness helps them to achieve long term well being once therapy has ended.

  • How will I benefit from working with you?

I will work with you throughout your transition, helping you to discover who you are and develop into a confident and integrated individual. Whatever you need I will be there to support you – whether it is changed to your physical appearance; finding and deciphering information; a shoulder to cry on, or deep psychological work that enables you to fully accept your life and the integration of both parts of your gender.

  • How do you deliver your therapy sessions?

I offer my services online via Skype, as this allows us to speak in the comfort of your own home.
